Radio telemetry for meter reading and monitoring in the water industry
April 2001
Level Measurement & Control
Radio Data Technology (RDT), a pioneer of radio telemetry, is launching its second-generation radio telemetry product, VersaNet 2. Its new features, such as internationally approved radio, a new Windows based GUI (graphic user interface) and on-board analog, pulse and digital I/O, makes it state-of-the-art technology in today's world.
The product is a cost-effective and reliable low-power radio link for applications such as reservoir level monitoring and pump control within the water industry. It also has the ability to be used as a remote RF wireless link in meter reading for municipal applications such as water and electricity.
VersaNet 2 is multichannel, allowing freedom of choice of operating frequency within legalised bands and avoidance of interference. There is no data corruption and/or unnecessary re-transmission. It automatically adjusts its RF power for optimal signal strength thus avoiding excessive use of power in the radio spectrum.
Installation is often merely bolting a box on a wall. No cable pulling, digging trenches or installation of cable trays is necessary. There are also no connection or call charges, or line rental fees after installation.
RDT spent three years developing a modular wireless telemetry system, the original VersaNet, which took advantage of the deregulation of certain radio frequencies within Europe to allow widespread licence-free use of radio for applications such as reservoir level monitoring and pump control within the water industry. VersaNet 2 can be used in a wide range of applications such as flow control, flow measurement, solar powered outstations, treatment monitoring and level control, supply and distribution of data.
The product range has now gained national approvals in more than 24 countries worldwide including South Africa. RDT believes that its ongoing research and development investment will ensure that VersaNet continues to be the most advanced and flexible product available on the market.
Water industry users of VersaNet in Europe include 10 regional water boards in the UK, two water supply control systems in Ireland, one in Finland, and one in Greece.
