SI strengthens presence in power management

The success of an automation installation at Durban Roodepoort Deep Gold Mine has earned Adroit Systems Integrator (SI) Wilkenson & Venter Electronics similar projects at four other mines.

Managing Member Les Venter says the contract 12 months ago included the automation of power management on all six shafts of the mine, using an Adroit supervisory control and data acquisition (scada) package, together with a series of Conlog programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Using eight mimics, it is now possible to monitor and control variables ranging from demand management to accounting.

The efficiency of the turnkey power control solution initiated wide market interest, leading to the company winning power management contracts on West Wits, Lorraine, Kromdraai and Joel gold mines. While most of these projects have not yet progressed to scada level, it has been of significant magnitude and will contribute to the company's growing stature in the industry. Venter adds that it had also successfully completed contracts in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mauritius and Zambia.
