Safety controller replaces relays

February 2009 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Software-based controller offers OEMs reduced cabling expense, greater flexibility and simple reproducibility.

Banner’s new SC22-3 safety controller is an efficient solution for connecting several safety devices to machine controls. The controller eliminates the need for several dedicated safety relays and integrates input devices such as emergency stop switches, light screens, two-hand controls, interlocking switches or safety mats in the machine control.

A total of 22 contact-based and PNP solid-state inputs can be monitored so that a broad range of input types for safety and non-safety devices can be covered. Each input can be assigned to one of the three dual-channel safety outputs. A combination of LCD display and status LEDs provides the user with information at any time about power supply, error states, output status and communication with the PC.

The user can either configure SC22-3 directly via pushbuttons and LC display or via a PC. The graphical user interface on the PC allows users to create and document complex safety logic configurations with several inputs and outputs in a few minutes. Faulty devices or wiring faults are detected automatically.

The controller is particularly suitable for use in welding robot cells, presses and many other machines used in automotive manufacturing, metal processing, materials handling, packaging and printing technology. It is approved up to and including SIL 3 in accordance with IEC 62061 and IEC61508 as well as Performance Level e in accordance with ISO 13849-1.
