Science real and relevant

November 2008 News

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is hosting its second biennial conference on 17 and 18 November 2008. Its scientists, engineers and technologists will present exciting research outputs set to impact positively on society and the economy. The conference themed ‘Science: real and relevant’ will take place in the spirit of sharing such research. The aim is to foster industrial and scientific development and thereby improve the quality of life of South Africans.

The conference, to be held at the CSIR Convention Centre in Pretoria, will be attended by high-profile delegates and the keynote address will be provided by the minister of Science and Technology, Dr Mosibudi Mangena.

Conference convenor Dr Martie van Deventer says, “Hot topics such as alternative energy sources, global environmental change and improving the safety and security of South Africa’s citizens will be among the research featured at the conference. The event will truly be about real and relevant science – science that impacts on the lives and livelihoods of all South Africans.

“The CSIR looks forward to showcasing some of its significant research outcomes to government and interested parties in the private sector. The conference is free of charge, but space is limited and therefore booking is essential.”
