Selective fuse breaking technology

July 2008 Electrical Power & Protection

Quint Power compact power supplies from Phoenix Contact are now equipped with SFB technology. In order to trigger standard circuit breakers magnetically and thus within a few milliseconds, power supplies must temporarily deliver a rated current that is considerably higher than normal. Quint Power now provides this power reserve. The six-fold rated current supplied for 12 ms allows faulty current paths to be selectively shut down while other system components remain in operation without interruption.

The diagnosis of the connected consumer loads has been expanded and works by constantly monitoring output voltage and output power. In addition to normal operation and malfunctions, the preventive monitoring feature now also identifies critical operating states while the power supply continues to operate faultlessly. This allows the controller to recognise faults with connected loads at an early stage. These faults can be eliminated before they lead to drops in voltage.

One- and three-phase versions with output currents of 3,5, 5, 10 and 20 A are currently available. The output voltage is adjustable between 18 to 29,5 V d.c. The power supplies are suitable for worldwide use in all industrial sectors thanks to their wide-range input, extensive international certification and a broad temperature range from -25 to +70°C. The high withstanding voltage of up to 300 V a.c. ensures additional operational reliability.
