The continuous monitoring of the temperature across a moving web of material can be performed simply and accurately with a noncontact, infrared line scanner. This is an instrument which produces a dynamic realtime picture of the temperature profile and displays it on a PC.

There are several of these line scanners in use in South Africa and in the metallurgical industry they have been installed to solve problems which occurred on a 4 m wide sinter bed conveyor and on a 3 m high molten steel ladle.

The conveyor carrying the sinter is made up from interlocking steel plates and air is drawn through the conveyor to ensure that the sinter is properly cooked. When a plate falls off the conveyor, air is sucked through the hole which interferes with the combustion of the sinter. The line scanner alarms this condition. It also enables the burner system to be finely controlled so that optimum combustion conditions are obtained.

The wear rate of refractory bricks in a ladle is difficult to assess. When molten steel burns through a ladle, it creates a highly dangerous situation in addition to the very costly damage and repairs. Regular scanning of the ladle solves this problem by providing an indication of the refractory condition.
