Ozone is fast becoming a cost-effective alternative to chlorine disinfection, especially in the drinking water industry. In addition to disinfection, ozone treatment eliminates odour, colour and taste problems. GLI International has recently introduced the Accu-Zone 53 system for continuously measuring ozone concentrations in water from 0,001 to 50 ppm, with an accuracy of 5 ppb.
The system consists of an analyser and sensor, which uses the polarographic measurement technique. The sensor has a high purity, gold cathode surrounded by a platinum guard ring with a silver anode. The ozone-selective membrane with impermeable mask reduces wear on electrodes and electrolyte by limiting exposure to ozone exclusively at the cathode. This means the sensor needs to be serviced only once every 6 months.
Other features of this new system are the quick response sensor membrane, the easy installation and the fact that it can be calibrated in air by temporarily converting it into an oxygen sensor. The sensor can be used up to a pressure of 2 MPa (20 bar) at 50°C. The analyser has two isolated 0/4 to 20 mA analog outputs, up to four relays, and can use HART Protocol communications.
Wastewater plants are required to disinfect their effluent before introducing it back into the environment. Chlorine is used extensively for this but its long lasting residual requires the use of additional chemicals to dechlorinate the effluent. Ozone decays much quicker than chlorine and still provides a highly effective disinfectant without the need for additional chemicals.
Analysers for use in high ambient temperature environments
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
The 993X series of analysers from Ametek Process Industries are now IECEx Zone 2 certified for use in locations with up to 60°C ambient temperature. Built with IP66-rated enclosures and using an integrated cooling system, they can be installed outdoors or in minimally temperature-controlled enclosures, reducing complexity while lowering capital and operating costs.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
