German chamber sponsors training

April 2008 Training & Education

The Southern African German Chamber of Commerce & Industry has joined forces with the Profibus User Group of Southern Africa (PUGSA) to run a broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) initiative in the field of industrial automation. The Chamber and PUGSA formed an Automation Training Council to co-ordinate and run this initiative, aimed at alleviating the current skills shortage in the country. The objective is to provide technology training, mainly for previously disadvantaged students, in the engineering field of high-tech automation, and to assist universities by equipping their laboratories with the latest equipment. The initiative is sponsored by local suppliers, installers and users of industrial automation technology with the German Chamber providing matching funding through its agency SEQUA.

“Students currently complete their education with little or no knowledge of fieldbus,” says Council chairman Dieter Dilchert, CEO of Lapp Cable SA. “We chose Profibus as the preferred method of training since it is the fieldbus platform most widely used in industry today.”

The training takes place in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, and the programme consists of three courses:

* Industrial data communications course.

* Internationally certified Profibus installers course.

* Internationally certified Profibus engineers course.

This collaboration between government and industry provides a great opportunity for companies to fulfil their social responsibilities, while they contribute to skills development in South Africa.
