In response to customer demand, Turck has developed a special sensor which can detect the presence of differing metallic compounds. The unique feature is analog eddy current sensing used to provide signal amplitude as well as phase information. Both signals (0-10 V) are emitted in analog form suitable for mathematical analysis. These two parameters can be used to recognise different metals independent of distance. The permissible temperature range of the sensor is between -10 and +70°C.
The big advantage of this inductive analog measurement method is the fast detection of metals, which is required in many modern applications. The metal sensor is designed primarily for use in vending machines and other coin recognition applications and the sorting of beverage cans made of aluminium or tin. A pilot test is underway in a seamless pipe manufacturing system to differentiate pipes manufactured from different metals. The sensor reliably detects the materials used and the diameter of pipe. The sensor can further differentiate between hardened and non-hardened materials.
Two ring sensor variants with internal diameters of 50 and 100 mm and a rectangular design are available as standard. Alternative packages are available on request and subsequent to consultation. Operating ranges from 4 to 11 mm are specified, and the operating temperature range is -10 to +70°C.
