Pace-setting hollow shaft encoder

February 2008 Sensors & Transducers

The new VFS60 hollow-shaft encoder from Sick Stegmann is designed specifically for installation in asynchronous motors. The device replaces the DGS66 encoder technology in this area of application.

The VFS60 permits any line number from 1 to 65 536 per rotation. The encoder's electrical insulation from motor shaft is a feature that substantially increases immunity to interference and thus availability. The operating temperature range of -20 to +100°C makes the series suitable for applications in harsh environments. An additional improvement is related to the encoders' quiet running. The separation of the two ball bearings in the encoders has been increased to 30 mm to reduce vibrations and achieve optimum concentric running, even at the maximum operating speed of 12 000 rpm.

Features such as:

* A hollow-shaft diameter of up to 15 mm.

* An external housing dimension of 60 mm.

* Easy attachment due to a large number of torque multipliers.

* A universal cable outlet.

Meet the basic prerequisites of most manufacturers of asynchronous motors. Further electrical and mechanical designs will follow later this year.

The encoder conforms to the requirements of the RoHS and has CE and UL approvals.
