PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Take the weight off your mind

February 2008 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

New process controller applications make it possible to solve dispensing problems without leaving your desk.

The X4 process controllers from Sartorius are designed for versatile, high-precision automated weighing tasks in industrial environments. For example, the controller can operate as a slave in complex batching processes, as a standalone for automatic filling and dosing with integrated recipe control, or as an intelligent controller for automatic filling and discharge of discrete materials. Operating software can be tailored to application requirements using the IEC 61131 programming standard and wide variety of interface cards is available to ensure easy integration with modern automation hardware. Communication can be implemented over commonly used serial links (RS232/422/485), or using analog 0/4-20 mA current loops. A unique feature is the large selection of fieldbuses supported, including Interbus S, DeviceNet, Profibus DP V1, CC-Link and Ethernet. The controllers are easy to integrate into a wireless LAN and the modular design allows adaptation to meet changing requirements.

With front dimensions of 196 x 92 mm, the X4 offers easy mounting in control panels, operator panels, or as a front-end unit for direct in-situ installation. The high contrast 7-digit readout with weight units and operating status symbols guarantees good readability even under adverse conditions. Two text lines with 20 characters each complete the display unit. Intelligent soft-key control features provide application-specific user dialogues and enable intuitive operation, alphanumeric input capability is also incorporated to allow application flexibility. Other standard features include connectivity for an external computer keyboard or a bar code scanner designed to simplify data input. The controllers are supported by a package of software tools to facilitate set-up and usage - the Power-Tools software includes utilities for printout formatting, database integration and a user interface for comprehensive remote operation of the controller from a computer. Using a remote computer connected to the Internet, the X4 equipment can be controlled from virtually any location. This means diagnosis and problem solving can be performed on customer systems anywhere in the world, from a single desktop.

The current range of controllers in the family includes:

* PRO-X4 with a built-in Alibi memory module, in addition to basic weighing functions such as tare and zeroing. Integrated terminal functions offer a customisable user dialogue for integration with higher-level systems, such as a PLCs or computers.

* BATCH-X4 with integrated recipe processing features is designed for controlling automated batching procedures, manual additions and other process steps.

* IBC-X4 is a versatile control unit for gravimetric charge or discharge of intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) with powders or granulated material.

* FILL-X4 is designed for manual or automatic filling of drums or other containers with liquids.

* FLOW-X4 is a flexible control unit for continuous control of material flow from weigh hoppers. A table of predefined start values, compression correction and cascade control functions round off the product capabilities.

* PHASE-X4 is a slave controller used in conjunction with the Sartorius ProBatch+ recipe management system. This configuration allows flexible design that can be used to control complex batching processes with multiple production lines and weighing points.
