February 2001 Operator Interfaces, Switches & Relays

RET Automation is offering Banner's GM-FA-10J gate monitoring safety module - a new monitoring device for use with both mechanical and magnetic safety switches for control-reliable gate and door guarding applications. The module verifies proper operation of either one or two safety switches by monitoring a normally-open (N/O) and a normally-closed (N/C) contact set from each switch. The GM-FA-10J is compatible with many mechanical and magnetic safety switches.

As repeated washdowns diminish the reliability of mechanically-switched gate guarding systems, Banner's new gate monitor, in combination with Banner's triple-coded magnetic safety switches, provides continuous reliable gate guarding for applications where repeated washdown is a factor, such as food processing and bottling.

The module features a self-checking, diverse-redundant microcontroller circuit and dual output channels (each with redundant contact sets from separate force-guided relays). The DIN-rail-mountable enclosure has removable wiring terminal blocks that snap out for easy module installation and replacement. Each switching output is rated for up to 250 V a.c. at up to 6 A.

The ultra-narrow module is just 22,5 mm wide x 84,0 mm high and 118,0 mm deep and easy to configure. Using on-board DIP switches, users set the module for one-channel operation (individual switches on two guards) or two-channel operation (redundant switches on a single guard) and auto reset or manual reset. The reset input can be used for external device monitoring.

Five LED indicators keep GM-FA-10J users constantly informed of operating status. Four green LEDs indicate Power ON, Channel 1 and Channel 2 inputs active, and safety outputs closed. A single red LED indicates faults such as internal power supply, ground fault or a short between input channels.

The unit comes in a durable polycarbonate housing; its internal circuitry protects against reverse polarity and transient live voltages. The safety module operates in temperatures of 0 to +50°C and is rated NEMA 1, IEC IP20. The GM-FA-10J also complies with standards UL990, EN1088 and EN954-1 Safety Category 2 or 4.
