Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Enterprise critical video systems

February 2001 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Chasms in business effectiveness encompass different problems in different industries, but the core concerns are almost universal. Undesired productivity, unnecessary non-value-added activities or processes, weak links in the supply chain, lack of product support, crisis management of maintenance issues, weak links in information flow, growth in demand that cannot be coped with through current processes and rise in operating expenses cover but a few of these challenges.

One aspect of information exchange that is seldom mentioned, but often wished for in hindsight, is video. The saying, 'a picture paints a thousand words' is significantly applicable in the control room scenario. Traditionally, CCTV cameras are used for security applications. However, the use of video in support of data during a process could add a valuable dimension to the information. Where data is normally the result of a process or action, the video provides clues to the action that caused the data transfer. The implementation of an integrated video system could result in an increase in efficiency that is in turn translated into profit.

The feature-rich Alpha video recording system, applying the latest digital video technology, is designed to be able to integrate with new or existing scada, access control and operations management systems. The recorder's open-ended architecture makes it flexible in terms of expanding applications and integration with IT-driven systems. The Alpha recorder is configurable as a slave unit, via a simple control interface from the external control system.

The recorder accepts control commands and returns own status via any IP addressable medium (LAN, WAN, Internet, etc). For large applications, multiple recorders can be networked. The recorder is capable of running its own control script and is fully self-managed to operate in a 24 x 7 environment. Processing and communication requirements are therefore minimised for the external control system.

The recorder can transmit video over distance, using ISDN and TCP/IP technology, to enable the playback of video recorded at a remote location, thus saving time and increasing efficiency. This information transfer over distance makes it ideal for wide-spread businesses that need to keep tabs on activities in near-real or realtime, for instance in the mining industry. Opsis provides a consultation and design service to assist the client in the planning and implementation of an integrated video system. The current logistic scope is taken into consideration, as well as the client's possible future expansions. On positive outcome of a feasibility study, software is developed for the business systems interface. System support completes the picture, with Opsis providing an on-line support service and training. Whether a totally integrated IT-based control system is required, or the integration of one business system with video, the effect of the added video dimension could improve the effectiveness of the operation significantly.

The role of enterprise critical video has close links with the logistics aspects of a business and it greatly enhances and supports the management system. Controlled and managed by IT, the implementation of such an enterprise critical video system can have far-reaching advantages and fits in with the philosophy of a totally integrated network within IT and overall business.
