Besides the possibility to integrate field devices via DDL into engineering and control systems the FDT/DTM technology makes a manufacturer independent interface available. It facilitates the use of non-cyclical operations and standardises the display of the positioner state, configuration and diagnosis data. The FDT-Software (field device tool such as PACTware, FieldCare) in the control system integrates the device specific DTMs (device type manager) of the field devices into the control system and provides a standardised surface for the display.
The intelligent positioners of the second generation ARCAPRO Type 827A with Profibus PA communication now offer this possibility as an alternative to the DDL concept. The DTM, which is developed on the basis of the FDT specification 1.2, facilitates the use of the enhanced diagnosis for the planning of preventive maintenance and thus helps to prevent plant stoppages and unnecessary maintenance work. In this way the availability of process plants can be increased providing substantial cost benefits.
