Integrated valve controller: combining bus, pilot valve and position sensors

November 2007 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

As a worldwide leader in the manufacture of grouts and adhesives for the building industry, Mapei (USA) placed a high importance on finding the right valve controllers for its plant expansion. The company wanted to expand its state-of-the-art polymer facility and incorporate full automation, bus technology, and diagnostics into the design. It was seeking a balance of quality, technology, functionality, and value.

Polymers are created from monomers, which are flammable in the raw material form. Therefore, the company needed a product that would be durable and reliable in this potentially hazardous environment.

Harold Sant, Mapei Polymer production supervisor, explained that they were interested in utilising bus networks, because of the data collection and troubleshooting ability, which they offered. After looking at several manufacturers, Mapei chose TopWorx. They were impressed with the vendor's expertise in digital buses.

In its selection of valve control products, project engineer Frank Cappi added, "We were especially impressed with the product certifications which TopWorx offered."

The Valvetop DXP discrete valve controller was an attractive solution because it combined bus networking, pilot valve, and position sensors into a single globally certified, explosion proof enclosure that could attach to any automated valve package.

Mapei installed 250 Valvetop DXP discrete valve controllers with AS-Interface, and 100 Valvetop DXPs with Foundation Fieldbus. Sant noted, "We were very pleased with the service from TopWorx. The Valvetop DXPs are working great. They are the right product for our plant."
