Loadcells exhibit long life

February 2001 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

In 1984 Instrotech installed six stainless steel Revere loadcells to weigh the yeast tanks at SA Breweries in Alrode. Sixteen years later the systems are still operating faultlessly which, according to Jood van Heerden, Engineering Manager for Maltsters SA, (a division of SAB), is remarkable considering the 'extra-harsh' environment in the yeast room.

"The yeast room is extremely wet with 98% relative humidity. The loadcells are subjected to daily high-pressure washdowns with various solvents. These stainless steel beam type cells are hermetically sealed to prevent moisture ingress and have just kept on performing."

Because of the proven reliability and to standardise, Jood has insisted on Revere loadcells when expansion projects have been undertaken. About four years ago, nine Revere systems were installed on the malt bins at SA Maltster. This is a dusty IP67 environment. Again, no problems have been encountered.

Late last year 20 beam Revere loadcells were installed at SAB Alrode on the malt mills and currently another 18 are being installed for the weigh batching of maltose.
