Honeywell South Africa's Graduate Development Programme is now entering its second year. It has proved successful in technical application terms and in enhancing employee development potential within the company.

Laveeena Munsamy, who was studying for a chemical engineering diploma in Durban, was part of the first group of graduates who were placed on the programme in 2006. She joined Honeywell as a graduate trainee and said: "I work at Honeywell in Secunda assisting in screen design and graphics. Having completed the one year graduate development programme I can say that the intense exposure to Honeywell's technological engineering systems has made an impact on my general engineering knowledge and career growth potential within the group.

"The training is very different to what one is normally exposed to and gives a greater insight into the potential of chemical and general engineering technologies and applications.

Tiyani Mavunda, graduate development programme administrator said: "Professional development of engineers is the key to the Honeywell ethos and culture and this developmental programme is well researched and planned to achieve these objectives.

"Once the programme has been completed, the successful graduates have a mentor appointed and an employee development plan and career path planned. With the engineering shortage in South Africa at present, it makes sense for Honeywell to engage with young engineering students and encourage and support them to become fully qualified engineers in sectors such as chemical, metallurgical and mechanical," Mavunda concluded.

Four graduates joined the programme in 2006 and six have enrolled in the 2007 programme.
