Servo controller is available with EtherCAT

July 2007 Motion Control & Drives

The b maXX 3422 servo controller from Baumüller, with a motor-side rated output current of 20 A, has been designed for power ratings of up to approximately 12,5 kVA. Consequently, it can typically be used to operate motors with a rated power of around 8 kW.

Until recently devices in this range have only been available with the CANopen fieldbus system. As of the second quarter of 2007, all controllers will also be available with EtherCAT. Functionalities that are worth a special mention are: Cycle times of 250 μs over EtherCAT, tunnelling of standard Ethernet TCP/IP packets through to the servo drive and integration into the ProMaster Engineering Framework.

All members of this series are configured and operated via this engineering framework, which enables the user to create projects and applications using intuitive drag-and-drop functionality. In this way complicated programming is reduced to simple parameterisation and configuration.

A cam disk function has also been introduced for the b maXX 3400. The cam disk has up to 512 interpolation points. As a result, cam disks can be simulated and calculated directly in the drive. This reduces the load on the higher-level machine control system.
