Filter weighing for gravimetric analysis

May 2007 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Filter weighing is a frequent application used in laboratories where pollution in the atmosphere, gases and liquids must be determined by filtration and weighing.

Microsep offers a complete solution to monitor environmental pollutants using Millipore membrane filters, cassettes and aerosol analysis monitors, available with 0,45 μm and 0,8 μm cellulose ester membranes. Matched weight monitors can contain two filters matched in weight to within 0,1 mg, eliminating test filter pre-weighing in gravimetric analysis applications.

Subsequent filter weighing is simplified using a Mettler Toledo high precision microbalance or analytical balance. An appropriate filter set can be included, depending on the size of the filter and the required measuring accuracy.

Weighing filters with Mettler Toledo MX or UMX micro- and ultra-microbalances, with resolution of up to 0,0001 mg, require special care in order to avoid electrostatic charges or other physical effects that could lead to improper results. This specific range of balances and accessories are specially designed for such delicate measurements using the most advanced weighing technology available, together with metal shielded filter sets. Two different sets are available - for filters up to 50 mm in diameter or 110 mm in diameter, with 0,002-0,1 mg resolution.

For large and/or heavier filters, filter weighing can be done with a Mettler Toledo AX analytical balance and an appropriate filter set. An optional RS42 printer can be attached to the balance in question for easy and error-free documentation including date, time and/or sample ID.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
