Dust monitor uses triboelectric effect

May 2007 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The S300 dust monitor range, developed by Sintrol, has several advantages that can help ease the process of monitoring the safety of the work environment. The instrument can detect particles from 0,1 mg/m³ and up.

The series has an automatic setup procedure, which calculates the best sensitivity compared to the dust concentration. These monitors use a unique method to detect dust particles: the signal is received through a monitor, and analysed in a 16-bit microcontroller, where an average value is determined. The right range is then selected and shifted at the same time as the particle concentration. The monitor always follows the changes in the dust concentration and shifts range accordingly.

The devices make use of the triboelectric effect: when particles come into contact with the sensor probe, a small amount of electrical charge is transferred, and then converted to a dust emission signal. This signal gives continuous information on the mass flow of solid particles from 0,1 mg/m³ up to 1 kg/m³. This dust monitor series includes the models S301 and S303.

The S301

This monitor, designed for filter bag leak detection, is equipped with two independent alarm relays for early warning and failure, detection of filter deterioration, filter blockage or breakage and process control (as an on/off system).

The response time of the S301 is fast, so it enables early detection and prevention of expensive product loss to the environment. Relays can be used in two modes: normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC).

The S303

This is a trend monitor with an advanced algorithm, which provides trends in dust emissions and filter performance. Like the S301 it has two independent alarm relays, as well as a 4-20 mA analog signal output, ideal for trend monitoring. It has the ability to monitor filter performances and the particulate emissions. Two relays will energise when the amount of particulates in the gas stream exceeds a preset level.

Both the S301 and the S303 are designed for the use in any process where indicative monitoring is required. Typical industries would include cement manufacturing, chemical processing, metals industry, pharmaceutical industry, mineral drying, food and tobacco, rubber compounding, animal feed processing, power plants and waste incinerators. The S300 series gives reliable measurements and has an easy, automatic setup procedure.
