Fast food chain relies on ColdTrak for quality assurance

February 2007 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

A major restaurant chain in the fast food industry in the United States recently used the ColdTrak temperature monitoring program to track temperature conditions of lettuce shipments throughout the entire cold chain - from the supplier to the distribution centre to the restaurant.

The food service company had concerns whether lettuce was being shipped and handled at appropriate temperatures. Out of range conditions automatically jeopardise product quality and shelf life. In an effort to locate the problem, various suppliers purchased DeltaTrak's Flashlink In-Transit dataloggers, and randomly inserted one unit into each shipment of lettuce.

After all the dataloggers were sent back to the ColdTrak support centre, they were downloaded into the ColdTrak database and archived. Using the FlashLink data manager software, data was compiled, trip data from each unit was analysed, and a comprehensive report was issued to the company. As suspected, the results showed that 26% of the distribution centres experienced temperature abuse conditions with the shipments, and 61% of the restaurants did not provide adequate temperature control of the lettuce after receiving it at their facilities.

The restaurant chain now relies on the ColdTrak Program to improve cold chain efficiency through better, comprehensive information management. With FlashLink In-Transit dataloggers they get complete traceability with serialised, permanent records of temperature conditions during transport. No other electronic data logger offers FlashLink's Shadow Log fail-safe feature that guarantees data recording even if the operator fails to activate the unit.
