A more economical approach to sensible pump motor protection

The motor protection relay under discussion is likely to be more expensive than other less expensive products available on the market. According to NewElec, this is true at least in the short term because of the company's approach to not compromising on protection.

It is the company's opinion that combining a sensible and economical approach makes a perfect union. Here are some protection principles from which NewElec will steadfastly refuse to compromise upon on the lower end of the pump protection market:

* A fixed, non-adjustable 15 second cold IDMT thermal curve which reverts to a 5 second curve as the motor approaches normal full load running temperature.

* Full thermal memory at all times that will also protect the pump motor against cyclic overloading patterns.

* Locked rotor protection on start-up.

* Load loss protection with user-defined load loss detection thresholds and trip delays ranging from 1 to 10 seconds.

* Phase loss and unbalanced load protection.

Add latched trip indications for all faults, an optional auto reset feature (limited to three per hour) and a small neat DIN rail mountable enclosure makes for an effective protection device.

The company warns against cheap alternatives that offer non-sensible options such as user-selectable time based trip delays for overload protection regardless of current magnitude or duration, no thermal memory thus excluding cyclic overloading protection, or immediate overload reset that takes no consideration of motor cooling periods. Also consider the fact that there may be no guarantees and no service backup.
