Programmable realtime signal calculator

January 2001 Temperature Measurement

PR Electronics is now offering the new PC-programmable PRetrans 5115 signal calculator. It is a signal calculator featuring the four arithmetical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). It is possible to perform redundancy measurements with two input signals or to duplicate the input signal.

The new signal calculator has programmable input for RTD, TC, mV, ohms, mA and V. At the same time the 5115 features programmable response time and programmable current/voltage output. As is usual in PR Electronics' products, the devices feature a high degree of isolation - in this case the PRetrans 5115 has five-port 3,75 kV AC galvanic isolation. There is mutual galvanic separation of inputs, outputs and supply.

The supply voltage is universal AC or DC and the calculator is available in both standard and an Ex versions, the Ex version 5115B being ATEX-approved in order to meet future requirements. It is a two-input module, and as the modules can be mounted without any distance between adjacent units, up to 42 modules can be mounted per metre of DIN rail.

The devices can be used for redundancy measurements of temperature by means of two sensors, where the secondary sensor takes over the measurement when a sensor error occurs on the primary sensor. It is also possible to duplicate the input signal from eg a temperature sensor or an analog process signal to two separate analog outputs. Some examples of its many possible applications include:

* Differential measurement: (Input 1 * K1) - (Input 2 * K2) + K4 (the constant).

* Average measurement: (Input 1 * 0,5) + (Input 2 * 0,5) + K4.

* Different functions on the outputs: Output 1 = Input 1 - input 2 and output 2 = Input 1 + input 2.

Within a few seconds the user can program PR 5115 to a selected application using the configuration software PReset. A green LED on the front flashes during normal operation. On a sensor or functional error the LED lights constantly. For safety reasons there is continuous check of vital stored data. The signal calculator opens up many other possibilities.
