Intrinsically safe infrared thermometers

November 2006 Temperature Measurement

Infrared (IR) thermometers are the latest source of portable and fixed temperature measurement devices made available to companies with hazardous plants requiring intrinsically safe (IS) equipment. IS units are not common to all infrared thermometer suppliers. However, Raytek, a world leader in IR thermometers, has a full range for fixed or portable applications available.

Raytek provides a complete range of IR thermometers with IS certification, designed for accurate temperature investigation in different types of environments. Intrinsically safe models include portable units with temperature ranges from -32 to 900°C and fixed units with simple 2-wire loops and programmable ranges up to 2000°C. Certification includes: PTB Approval EXII2GG EExibIICT4, Atex 100a on fixed units and Fm Approval, US Standard for portables.

Temperature anomalies are often an indication of underlying problems. Being able to identify temperature discrepancies quickly and safely allow accurate rectificative decisions to be made. The popularity of these thermometers continues to grow because of their ease of use, reliability and affordability.

Like traditional thermometers, IR thermometers translate hot and cold into numeric measurements. However, unlike traditional methods, an IR thermometer does not require contact with the object to be measured. The IR thermometer is pointed at the target (from distances of a few millimetres to more than 10 m away, depending on the model) and the temperature is immediately read on the display.

Whether an object is untouchable because of location, temperature or material, IR thermometers can reach the target and read the temperature. Knowing the temperature of an object is useful, especially around liquids nearing their flash points or in a process operating at a critical temperature.

Instantaneous reading and reliable results make trouble shooting quick and easy, with less chance for error. IR thermometers help process and maintenance engineers alike to quickly check their plant, giving them the information needed to assess the temperature and plan the most effective solution.

In addition, some portable IR thermometers are available with logging features so temperatures can be stored and retrieved later, which is ideal for record keeping or report backs.
