New gel-based pH probe for water and wastewater industries
October 2006
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
Control and monitoring of pH is a key aspect of many industrial wastewater and water treatment processes. For example, a low pH can be corrosive to sewer facility components such as pipes, screening equipment and pumps. In addition, accurate pH measurements are important for determining the state of the raw effluent, for controlling the dosage of chemicals in neutralisation and other necessary chemical treatment steps, as well as for monitoring the quality of the final discharge.
Furthermore, control of wastewater is becoming increasingly important in order to avoid potential environmental and growing legal consequences.
As a result, testo has now launched a revolutionary pH measuring instrument which is used for efficient and accurate monitoring in water and wastewater treatment. The newly designed hole-diaphragm, gel reference electrolyte and low membrane resistance ensures that the pH probe is unaffected by dirt, protein and soiling, and gives a fast and stable reading. Additionally, the testo 206 includes a unique combination of a pH penetration tip and a temperature probe. Consequently, accurate readings are guaranteed in all ambient conditions. This combination is embedded in fracture proof plastics which increases the robustness of the probe.
The testo 206 has been designed with ease of use in mind. The pH-probe can be easily and quickly calibrated to one, two or three points (pH-values 4/7/10). The buffer solutions for calibration come DKD calibrated. UniTemp has an officially authorised calibration laboratory for temperature and humidity and is able to issue ISO 9001 calibration certificates. Its calibration ranges are -25 to 200°C for temperature and logger equipment and 11,3% RH to 75,3% RH for humidity probes.
Moreover, testo has developed a new storage gel. As this potassium chloride solution is a gel and not a liquid it cannot leak. Therefore, the probes will not dry out and will last longer. The storage gel comes in a patented preservation cap, which clicks onto the probe after use. Measured values are easy to read due to the illuminated display.
testo portable instruments are exclusively distributed in South Africa by UniTemp.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
