Ethernet modules for direct input-to-output communication

September 2006 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

Ethernet modules manufactured by Acromag can be used to link inputs to outputs without a PLC, PC or master CPU. Sensor inputs (for example six channel 4-20 mA, 0-10 V d.c, thermocouple, RTD or 12 digital inputs) can be converted to process signals (such as six channel 4-20 mA or 0-10 V d.c. or 12 digital outputs) at another point. The modules have a built in 'web page' which allows configuration using a standard web browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer), so there is no need for complicated programming software. Each unit can be set with an IP address. This allows the modules to be connected to existing infrastructure through a copper, fibre or wireless network. The digital modules allow for bi-directional communication.

A simple application would be, for example, six 4-20 mA inputs on a module connected to a network and then the output module with six 4-20 mA outputs connected to the same network. Communication is achieved via standard IP addressing over Ethernet. An input module communicates directly to an output module and multiple modules can be connected or multiplexed with the use of a standard network hub or switch.

Acromag also supplies a large range of modules for Profibus, Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, Lonworks, analog signal conditioning and limit alarms/trips.
