Customisable modular flue gas analysers for a variety of applications

August 2006 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The new EPA verified testo 350-S/XL flue gas analyser system, which is exclusively distributed in South Africa by UniTemp, offers clients a versatile and adaptable solution to portable flue gas analysis. The newly introduced testo 350-S is a modular version of the XL but has the advantage that all features of the 350-XL can be retrofitted to it, allowing one to tailor an optimal solution without foregoing unnecessary capital outlay.

The testo 350-S comes standard with an O2 measurement cell. Up to a maximum of five further measurement modules can be retrofitted. The measurement modules NO2, SO2, NO, NOlow, CO, COlow, H2S, CxHy or CO2 direct (infrared technology) are optional. Temperature and differential pressure are also measured and the usual parameters such as CO2 are calculated.

The testo 350-XL is equipped with measurement modules for O2, CO, NO, and NO2 as standard. In addition measurement modules for CxHy, NOlow, COlow, SO2, H2S or CO2 direct (infrared technology) are also available. Parallel to the features of the S-version, the 350-XL version has a Peltier gas preparation with a peristaltic hose pump for the controlled removal of condensate as well as a fresh air valve for long-term measurements over several hours. Both versions of the flue gas analyser can be equipped with a maximum of six measurement modules. They have as standard a built-in rechargeable battery, a storage memory of 250 000 measurement values as well as a databus connection. All features of the testo 350-XL can be retrofitted in the testo 350-S.

The 350 system has a built-in automatic dilution factor (only available with the fresh air rinsing option on the testo 350-S), which dilutes the concentration of gases to extend the measuring ranges and protect the measuring cells. This minimises the chances of overloading the cells during the start up phase of combustion systems or when monitoring emissions in stationary engines. The optional comsoft software permits automated or manual measurements to be taken at specified times, or when triggered by an external signal.

Different velocity, gas and temperature sampling probes exist for different applications. The modular gas probes are available in lengths from 335 mm up to 3 m and can withstand temperatures of up to 1800°C depending on the application. A probe pre-filter is also available, which helps to filter out particles in dusty flue gasses. For increased versatility the unit with which the 350S-XL is controlled is removable. For applications in which there is a great distance between the gas sampling site and the burner the control unit can be connected to the flue gas analyser with a databus cable. The measurement values are documented with the built-in printer in the control unit.

In addition to this, the control unit can be used as a separate handheld measuring instrument for differential pressure (integrated), temperature, humidity and velocity using the additional probe input.

These systems, with a large display and fast readings, are useful tools for adjustment and regular maintenance on stationary engines, gas burners and combustion turbines. They are portable, versatile and robust and can be tailored to suit individual needs, providing a cost-effective flue gas measurement solution. The testo range of flue gas analysers includes entry-level units for single gasses to highly complex systems for longer term monitoring of emissions.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
