Temperature Measurement

Food goes wireless

August 2006 Temperature Measurement

Regular temperature monitoring is essential to ensure product quality in accordance with HACCP standards. Until now personnel in the food industry have experienced limitations imposed by connection cables on food measuring instruments, and damaged plugs and cables after extensive use. Products that are moving on a conveyor belt, cooked in rotating machinery, or are packed away in containers often cannot be measured at all.

testo, a European leader in portable measuring equipment, has developed a new range of wireless temperature and humidity testing probes to be used in combination with temperature and humidity measuring equipment.

The data is transmitted by radio over a distance of up to 20 to 25 m. The temperature radio probes can be equipped with a standard temperature immersion or penetration tip as well as a surface temperature measuring tip. A thermocouple adapter (type K) makes it possible to have any type K thermocouple probe become wireless. The transmission frequency used is an 869,85 MHz FSK (approved by ICASA for use in South Africa). The testo 110, 735 and 635 thermometers can all be equipped with wireless probes. The 635 and 735 units can detect up to three different radio probes simultaneously.

Data can be stored or printed locally with date and time. This is particularly useful when receiving goods, since both supplier and recipient are provided with a record of the temperature data. If high or low limit values are exceeded (in accordance with HACCP standards), the instrument sounds an acoustic alarm.

The display is back-lit, and both minimum and maximum values can be accessed in the two-line display. The Auto-Hold function recognises a stable end value and automatically fixes it in the display.
