Redlake recently launched its MotionPro X3 and X4 high speed cameras for motion analysis. Typical applications include microscopy, ballistics and munitions testing, biomechanical research, fluid dynamics research (PIV), off-board vehicle impact testing and air-bag testing.

Peter Westwood of local distributor, Westplex, describes the MotionPro X high-speed motion camera as, "Combining excellent resolution to frame rate performance, along with advanced features for accurate high-speed motion analysis on a PC/Mac laptop or desktop computer. The enhanced sensitivity together with high resolution, is perfect for research and development laboratory environments."

The MotionPro X3 captures images at 1000 fps with a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels and has a maximum speed of 64 000 fps at reduced resolution. The MotionPro X4 delivers 5000 fps at 512x512 pixel resolution and has a maximum speed of 140 000 frames per second at reduced resolution. Both models feature Gigabit Ethernet and USB2.0, also support live video for continuous monitoring.

The extensive image processing algorithms include:

* Binning (2x2, 3x3, and 4x4).

* Filtering.

* Advanced colour control.

* A programmable LUT that enables maximisation of the image quality under various lighting conditions.

"Flexible recording options allow the user to capture a pre-selected number of frames before and/or after receiving a trigger," continues Westwood. "Double exposure mode, with a 100 nanoseconds inter-frame time, is perfect for motion analysis on objects moving at very high speeds. Memory may be divided into multiple sessions with or without automatic download to assure no event is missed."

The cameras can either be controlled with MotionPro X software, with LabVIEW or MATLAB plug-ins to integrate into a larger experiment setup. A software development kit (SDK) is included. iPod and PDA compatibility is provided, allowing the user to store movies on an iPod (video) for quick review. The camera can be controlled by remote wireless via PDA interface.
