Insulation fault location with power on

July 2006 Electrical Power & Protection

An innovative insulation fault location system which automatically locates insulation faults during operation, is now offered by Bender.

This development was prompted by the fact that the availability and reliability of power supply systems are essential factors for the efficiency and productivity of company processes. Unexpected interruptions and malfunctions are costly and time-consuming. For this reason, important power supply systems are designed as IT systems with insulation monitoring.

The insulation monitoring device, A-Isometer IRDH575, monitors the insulation resistance of IT systems (unearthed power supply systems) and in combination with the EDS460 insulation fault evaluators (and the corresponding measuring current transformers) be extended to become an insulation fault location system.

Insulation fault location takes place automatically during operation and hence, it is no longer necessary to switch off the electrical installations. The modular system operates in line with the system requirements and can monitor up to 1080 sub-circuits with a total query time for all sub-circuits of less than 10 seconds. The faulty outputs are indicated on the LC displays so that insulation faults can be precisely located and the appropriate service measures implemented in a quick and cost-effective manner.

Application areas include branched or linkable IT systems in the industrial, mining and shipbuilding areas, also with variable-speed drives and powerful loads. The exchange of information between the devices takes place via a time and cost-saving RS485 interface. Higher ranking systems can easily be connected via Ethernet or other Fieldbus systems.

The large LC displays and the user-friendly menu structure offer ease of operation and the system operator can access all the necessary information centrally or locally. The operating panel enclosure of the IRDH575 can easily be mounted into the door of the control cabinet and the evaluator EDS460 is designed as a distributor enclosure for 45 mm cut-outs and DIN rail mounting. Measuring current transformers, which are used to record insulation faults in the individual sub-circuits, are available in various frame sizes.
