Remote process monitoring

A customer wanted to monitor an entire process from his computer. The process included sensors to measure humidity, flow, level, and pressure. The only problem he had was finding an easy way of bringing several different types of analog signal into one PC.

The IAMS, with its 18 range input, made this an easy application to solve. Using the Windows-based SFIMS software, the customer scaled each IAMS for the different sensor outputs. Using the 150 mm long RJ-11 jumpers (part# CBJ11BD5) the units were easily interconnected into a single cable. The CBPRO007 cable, which allows cable runs of 1,2 km, was used to convert the module's RS485 signal into RS232 for the computer. The customer used off-the-shelf data acquisition software with a Modbus driver, and was capable of monitoring each variable, and adjusting each of the IAMS's dual alarms.

Handy analog additions

Customers who use, or would like to use small 'brick' type PLCs often run into a problem, they usually do not have analog inputs. The same is true with motion controllers. An easy way to add analog inputs to any system is to use a Red Lion G3 series operator interface as a gateway between the PLC and one or more IAMSs. The G3 HMI's unique ability to talk multiple protocols allows it to exchange data between the PLC or motion controller and the IAMSs.
