Festo Didactic addresses the skills shortage

June 2006 Training & Education

Festo Didactic, locally and internationally, is dedicated to developing leading solutions that result in more efficient and successful training for the entire spectrum of automation. This is especially important in a country like South Africa that is in the midst of a skills shortage. In keeping with this goal, Festo Didactic South Africa has launched a new mechatronics short course that has been accredited by MERSETA, the manufacturing, engineering and related services SETA.

Festo Didactic also offers a full time mechatronic certificate course that is due for inclusion in the curricula of many technology tertiary institutes in 2007. The full-time course encompasses mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatics, and informatics components thus offering a comprehensive qualification.

Tom Webster, Festo Didactic manager, has been intimately involved with the development of these courses: "The country, and especially the manufacturing industry, is facing a serious skills shortage. Our aim at Festo Didactic is to analyse the educational requirements and then develop and implement appropriate measures to combat the shortage.

"The mechatronics course is now a certified qualification and will offer students a myriad of skills and valuable technical knowledge. The course combines theory with practice and includes aspects such as function and application of actuators and sensors, the role of controllers and control software and system integration."

Festo Didactic currently offers eight short courses per month presented by dedicated lecturers, in Gauteng, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, and East London. Festo Didactic also closely co-orates with technology orientated tertiary institutions such as Nelson Mandela University of Technology and Durban Institute of Technology, providing first hand industry knowledge and experience as well as the physical technology and facilities needed to provide a comprehensive learning experience.
