Tank monitoring and alarm telemetry

May 2006 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

The tank monitoring system is a standalone system designed to monitor remote tanks. Applications can vary from liquid gas pressure vessels to water reservoir levels. The unit has a large easy to read LCD display to show the level in either mass, m, volume or percentage.

A local alarm output is provided for critical alarm conditions (high or low level), as well as a separate mains fail alarm indication and output. The system can be used as a standalone monitoring and alarm panel connected to an existing alarm system, or a GSM modem can be connected for remote alarming and reporting. The unit comes fitted with a backup battery.

A GSM modem can be fitted to provide the following functionality:

* Remote SMS alarm notification.

* Selectable time period for value reporting by e-mail or SMS.

* Downloading logged data remote system setup and configuration.

The Tank Monitoring System is an embedded microprocessor controlled device, with a single 12-bit analog input channel. It will accept a 4 to 20 mA signal from various different sources (differential pressure transmitters, pressure sensors, level sensors, etc). This signal is then internally calculated to provide an accurate representation of the value in the desired units.

Dual RS232 ports are fitted on the controller for GSM connection and direct PC/laptop connection. A large digital LCD display is fitted with a visual window for a quick view of the value. An external pushbutton will toggle the display between mass or volume, and %. The controller calculates the required value as tons, volume, flow or a % by means of internal intelligence built in the processor based on entered data such as the tank dimensions specific gravity of the liquid being measured.

These parameters can be changed at any time, either remotely via GSM modem or from a laptop PC. Up to three cell numbers can be entered for the SMS functionality. The unit also has a built in logger with realtime clock to log at the rate of 1 sec to one day and a memory of 4500 readings. The tank monitoring system operates off a power supply of 220 V a.c. or 12 V d.c.
