Intelligent camera series sees serial production

January 2006 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Basler has started serial production of its newest player in the vision components arena, the eXcite. The eXcite integrates a top-quality digital camera and a complete high-performance PC in a small industrial grade housing. A 1 GHz MIPS processor running under Linux is the heart of Basler's eXcite. Depending on the camera model, the maximum frame rate varies from 60 to 180 frames per second at VGA resolution. New camera variants with 1,45 or 2 megapixel CCD Sensors will extend the eXcite family and will be available soon.

Even when operating at high image capture rates, the device can make complex, comprehensive calculations. Precise measurement and positioning tasks can be performed, as well as inspection and identification work. With the multiple integrated interfaces available on the eXcite, including opto-coupled digital inputs and outputs, a GigaBit Ethernet port, a serial interface, and high speed USB 2.0 ports, calculated results can be fed directly into the production process without the need for additional hardware components. Using these capabilities to detect defective parts on a production line and to automatically trigger their removal from the production process is just one example of a task made simple by the eXcite. An image showing the detected error can be displayed on an optional mobile USB touch display.

The eXcite can optionally be bundled with HALCON Embedded from MVTec. HALCON is an extensive software library for industrial image processing. It provides more than 1150 operators offering high performance in applications such as blob analysis, morphology, pattern matching, metrology, 3D calibration, and binocular stereo vision, to name a few.

The interactive development environment of HALCON 'HDevelop' supports quick and easy development of image processing solutions. Using these capabilities to detect defective parts on a production line is one example of a possible task. www.westplex.co.za
