Spillback desuperheater provides accurate temperature control

December 2000 Temperature Measurement

Mitech's spillback desuperheater provides accurate temperature control to within ±1°C and offers good atomisation at all flows. The Mitech spillback system allows water to be piped directly to the nozzle and can be 'spilled' back to a low-pressure sump through a control valve. The higher the backpressure created by the valve, the more water is injected into the steam. This is the opposite action to the conventional system where, if the spraywater valve closes, less water is added.

The benefit of this spillback arrangement is that the full pressure of the water is available at the nozzle at all times and atomisation improves at lower flow rates. The system can also be used on large units by simply increasing the number of nozzles.

Robust in design, the device is simple to install and maintain. It has a turndown ratio of 10:1 and may be mounted in any position. There are no moving parts in the steam flow and a low pressure drop occurs across the unit. Typical applications include cooling blast furnace gas, cooling of superheated steam and exhaust gas cooling.
