2,4 m damper

Spirax Mitech has recently engineered and supplied a 2,4 m hot gas damper to one of the steel mills. The medium is gas at 200°C containing potassium chloride particles. The valve is designed to be open virtually all the time, only closing in the event of downstream maintenance.

The high potassium chloride content is highly corrosive when flowing, but due to the low velocity, it tends to settle in heaps where the flow is disturbed. It is hygroscopic and reacts with water to create an acid, which is highly corrosive. Due to this, and the large size of the valve, careful material selection and the design of a special downstream device was necessary for the valve to be affordable yet reliable.
