There is a distinct difference between the infrared energy radiation from metals in the solid state and metals in the liquid state. High temperature ordinary portable infrared thermometers are able to accurately measure the temperature of most metals in a solid state, ie, steel billets, etc. Once a metal changes state to a liquid, an ordinary or single colour thermometer will not work and the readings are erratic and meaningless because a liquid metal is a non-linear grey-body.
The only infrared method that can accurately measure molten metal is a 2-colour or ratio thermometer. Up till now, ratio thermometers have been fixed, permanently mounted systems. The Convir OS3750 from PREI Instrumentation is a new truly portable infrared pyrometer monitoring temperature in single or 2-colour (ratio) format, with a temperature range of 600 to 2000°C (2-colour) and 400 to 3000°C (single colour). It has an external LCD display and 4-digit display in the viewfinder. Up to 500 data-points can be stored, and if necessary, communication to a PC is via optional software.
