Profibus master wireless solution

September 2005 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

The new Profibus master wireless solution eliminates cabling nightmares when connecting to remote I/Os or Profibus slave devices. Connecting remote I/Os back to a PLC can be difficult as it often requires a lot of cabling. Additionally, I/O racks are sometimes used on moving equipment and, thus, cabling is often impractical as it drags on the floor.

Consequently, Elpro has recently launched a Profibus master radio to complement its wireless gateway range, thus, eliminating cabling problems when connecting remote I/Os or Profibus slave devices. This module enables the user to transmit values for up to 10 km. The distance can be extended even further by repeating through other modules in the systems.

With this module users can connect up to 125 slave devices with up to 2048 inputs as well as 2048 output bytes of data, thus, enabling the user to access many I/Os. It can also communicate with slave devices at up to 12 Mbit/s and will transmit the data on change of state, update time or when polled depending on set-up, thus, ensuring efficient control and monitoring of the process. Manufacturers of slave devices supply .gsd files with their products. These files are loaded into Elpro's E-Series configuration software, enabling easy configuration of a Profibus network and uncomplicated telemetry system maintenance without the need of specialised equipment or personnel.

The Profibus master radio communicates to Profibus slave devices via the fieldbus interface. However, it can communicate to any of the other Elpro Gateway devices through its radio port irrespective of the fieldbus interface of that module. This means that you can incorporate remote I/O on a Profibus network to devices with a Modbus, Profibus, Devicenet, Ethernet or Modbus Plus interface. The versatility and user-friendliness of Elpro wireless solution ensures an efficient implementation of remote I/O. Elpro radio modules are exclusively distributed in South Africa by UniTemp.
