Data Acquisition & Telemetry

1,45 and 2 megapixel CCD cameras

September 2005 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

At full resolution, Basler's 1,45 megapixel A631f and its 2 megapixel A641f cameras run at up to nearly 19 or 14 frames per second (fps) respectively. These IEEE 1394 cameras feature small housing sizes, close to the dimensions of typical analog cameras, adding force to the 'analog goes digital' trend. The cameras will be available in monochrome or colour.

The A641f was launched at the Vision Show West in San Jose, California. The A641f has a 1/1,8" sensor with 1624 x 1236 resolution and 4,4 µm x 4,4 µm pixels. The upcoming A631f has a 1392 x 1040 pixel resolution and a 4,65 µm x 4,65 µm pixel size. Mechanical replacement of an analog camera with the A631f or 641f is quite easily performed.

A combination of the popular IEEE1394 interface and Basler's current BCAM software (Version1.8 SP1) provides a powerful solution for many vision system applications. The A631f and A641f support Basler's smart features framework (SFF), which provides a collection of unique camera features such as our individually programmable lookup table (LUT).

With the LUT feature, the shape of the camera's sensitivity curve can be changed by the user. This opens a range of possibilities beyond a normal gamma correction. The 12 bit output from the camera's sensor can either be mapped to 8 bit output via the lookup table feature or can be directly output at 8 bit or 12 bit depth. The 12-bit output provides a high dynamic range. Because the sub 5 µm pixel size is smaller than some other Basler cameras, the absolute sensitivity is a bit less than, for example, the A102f. A long exposure mode is now part of the SFF capabilities, and with the help of this feature, the camera's shutter time can be extended up to 5 seconds (uncooled).
