Harsh telemetry system gains popularity

June 2005 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Since 1998, the development of the SL2000 harsh telemetry system has proved to be one of Spero Group's greatest successes. The SL2000 is based on the Lonworks protocol, to enable network communications, and has earned acceptance throughout the mining industry. The system provides an early warning of potential danger situations and is equipped with a multipurpose telemetry system. This supplies the user with reliable two-way communication, between the mineworker and other mine infrastructure systems. These include environmental and control monitoring systems.

The SL2000, originally developed for fire detection, has proven to be so versatile, thanks to its robust and modular design, that it is now being installed for various applications, including:

* Environmental monitoring.

* Engineering monitoring.

* Logistics monitoring.

* Man and asset tracking.

* Process control.

* Ore handling.

* Safety and rescue.

* Voice communications.

ATOK, one of its current users, decided to install the SL2000, due to its excellent reputation in the mining industry. ATOK expressed its legal responsibility towards the Mine Health & Safety Act: "The mine employer must ensure that there is a device installed that will warn workers of any impending danger associated with explosions and fires."

Since ATOK installed the SL2000, it has detected two gassing reports, which ATOK investigated and identified. The Spero Group offers a wide range of environmental sensors, designed for harsh underground conditions, to complement the SL2000 system. Spero Group offers a 24-hour call-out technical field support service, as well as training in the use of the SL2000.
