pH meter for wastewater treatment and water purification

April 2005 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring Asset Management

In industrial wastewater treatment and water purification, robust and accurate pH measuring equipment is necessary to determine the state of the raw effluent, control the dosage of chemicals in the neutralisation process and monitor the quality of the final discharge. Current industrial pH probes have a fairly short life span due to glass breakage and dirt ingress. These meters are also sensitive to soiling, protein and dirt, resulting in incorrect measurements. The storage solution often leaks which leads to dried out probes.

Testo, a European leader in portable measuring equipment, is offering a pH-measuring instrument that it believes is revolutionary. Intended for efficient and accurate monitoring in industrial wastewater treatment and water purification, the hole-diaphragm, gel reference electrolyte and low membrane resistance ensures that the pH probe is unaffected by dirt, protein and soiling. The Testo 206 pH1 is easy to use due to its one button operation, which gives a fast and stable reading of both temperature and pH on a clear two-line display.

The pH tester includes a unique combination of a pH penetration tip and a temperature probe. Consequently, accurate readings are guaranteed in all ambient conditions. This combination is embedded in fracture proof plastics, which makes the probe more robust. As a result, probes will last longer since glass breakage is almost impossible.

Testo's new potassium chloride storage solution is a gel and not a liquid. Therefore, it cannot leak and the probes will not dry out and will last longer. The storage gel comes in a patented preservation cap, which clicks onto the probe after use.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
