Level Measurement & Control

Low-cost hydrostatic level control

April 2005 Level Measurement & Control

The Hawk PE Series is a loop powered (4 to 20 mA) system designed for use in the sewage, water treatment, mining, paper and power industries. Available from Protea Automation Solutions, it uses two pressure cells to obtain the hydrostatic pressure of the liquids being measured. The primary pressure cell is incorporated in the submersible transducer and measures the pressure of the liquid. The secondary cell measures the ambient pressure and compensates for changes in pressure due to atmospheric conditions. The primary cell provides a linear voltage output proportional to the pressure. This voltage is precisely measured and processed along with the output from the secondary cell to provide stable, accurate, and precise hydrostatic level measurement.

The transmitter and local display are housed in a convenient panel-mount enclosure, or optionally mounted remotely. Unique Hawk software allows easy access to all parameters and the span can be adjusted via the keypad on the transmitter even if the transducer is not connected. This means the span can be programmed prior to installation.

The transducer is designed to be directly submerged in liquids that are compatible with 316 stainless steel, and can be suspended in the vessel or flange fitted on the side of the vessel. The transducer is temperature compensated and therefore provides a high level of accuracy. The system incorporates three levels of suppression to protect against electrical spikes induced by lightning. High quality shielded cable is used to provide protection against induced electrical noise, and optional Teflon jacketed cable can be supplied for additional chemical resistance.

No capillary tubes or desiccants are required, small diameter transducers are employed, gold plated ceramic diaphragms are used, and a user-selectable lock code is incorporated to prevent unauthorised access to the set-up.

Grounding of hydrostatic level sensors
WIKA Instruments Level Measurement & Control
Hydrostatic level sensors are very often installed in outdoor applications, primarily in the water and wastewater industries. A good connection to ground is essential when installing hydrostatic level sensors, since no grounding or poor grounding can result in destruction or damage to the level sensor.
