HMI/scada system for process automation

November 2004 SCADA/HMI

ZenOn is an HMI/scada system that clearly shows the user what is currently happening in production, in the factory block, or in a building. Like a circuit diagram, the interrelation of process flows are displayed graphically and animated. It serves both for visualisation and interactive control of a process. It meets and supports FDA 21 CFR Part 11 requirements and can be adapted to meet specific requirements, on any Windows operating system - and is offered in five different languages.

Claimed to have been the first fully graphic, Windows-based visualisation system on the market, it now offers a universal solution for all Windows-platforms from Windows CE to 2000/XP and thus is fully compatible from the terminal up to the control room.

ZenOn CE for PDAs (eg, the Compaq iPAQ) allows for an added dimension of operating and monitoring. This innovation brings a considerable increase in mobility. Users can move in the production hall connected with a cable - or freely, with Wireless LAN or Bluetooth - and can operate and monitor the equipment with ZenOn CE. So the handheld PC can either communicate directly with the PLC, or via a connection to ZenOn server. ZenOn CE works here as a client, and with this solution again, the user can profit from the full universality of Windows CE - 2000/XP.

Projects are created platform-independently with ZenOn and then transported to the desired target system. All ZenOn network services are available on the PDA, so existing projects are available without any changes for handheld PC - or even in the browser. Another advantage is to keep existing projects (older versions) compatible to the newest product versions. In times of shorter product cycles this is an important argument to guarantee investment for the future.

One of the special features of ZenOn is its network functionality. Beside the traditional network models with one server and several clients, ZenOn also offers decentralised networks with several servers. Data in administration loads are distributed, which shortens reaction times and decreases network load. This becomes especially noticeable when using the circular redundancy.

Redundancy means failure prevention of visualisation systems. This is achieved by doubling hardware and software components. If a computer crashes, another one takes over its tasks. In order to avoid data loss during failure, the second computer takes over all the functions of the first. Due to the fail-safe alignment mechanism no data is lost.

ZenOn's redundancy, as well as its multiproject or multiserver technology, is the basis for the circular redundancy. Usually the control (ie, redundancy) function is taken over by a second PC, in the circular redundancy the PCs running as servers are redundancy servers - one for the other. Easy to configure, each PC works as a server, a standby-server and as a client for different projects at the same time. So the necessity of additional hardware or software licences is reduced to a minimum, and the availability of the equipment is kept on the highest level.

ZenOn also offers a variety of tools, but the main attraction is its user friendliness. The user interface can be configured individually and is easy to handle. No programming experience is needed. Automatic engineering/projecting is accomplished by setting parameters.

Online language selection

When a project is created, the needed language tables are added as text files, and with a simple mouse click the desired language can be activated - online.

External programs are not necessary. All data can be administered directly with ZenOn. The basic version can be extended individually with different modules and options: archiving/report generator/message control/extended trend/recipe group manager, for example.

The ZenOn SQL Server permits archive data to be directly written into a SQL database, or ZenOn itself works as a SQL server. So any SQL client can read data directly from ZenOn with 'Select Statements'. Additional interfaces are no longer needed, failure security is increased, and error sources are reduced.

Another important point for customers is the openness of the system. ZenOn offers more than 250 different drivers to realise the connection to different bus and PLC systems. Straton is an IEC 61131-3 based Soft Logic (Soft PLC) and an integrated part of ZenOn, so ZenOn offers the possibility to combine visualisation and control in one device!

With the direct integration of VBA, individual requirements and adaptations can easily be achieved. For the connection to existing systems or data transfer to ERP systems, effective interfaces are available.
