Pressure Measurement & Control

Quiet, low maintenance gas-pressure regulator

September 2004 Pressure Measurement & Control

In recent years, the gas transport, distribution as well as industrial markets have been asking increasingly for regulators with low maintenance costs, a low noise level and optimal operation at pressure differences from 50 kPa. To address this demand, Gorter Controls produced the BAAI R100(S) gas-pressure regulator.

Characterised by reliable functioning at (flow) capacities of practically zero up to 100%, it offers high regulating accuracy and reliable operation. An additional perk is the fact that this regulator offers considerable noise reduction and high flow capacity.

New techniques do away with the need for large investments in soundproof housings for gas reducing stations. The noise reduction achieved also means a considerable improvement of the working conditions of maintenance technicians and a reduction of nuisance to the 'community'.

In order to prevent noise pollution, the problem is tackled close to the source. Using patented techniques and a noise reducing cage, the BAAI R100(S) reduces noise production to an acceptable minimum. The design permits the actuator and valve disc to be mounted from above and the 'erosion-free' seat ring can be inspected and replaced by means of the detachable bottom cover. This in addition to the long maintenance intervals results in minimal maintenance costs. In practice, it can be difficult to provide an uninterrupted supply of gas with the required pressure to meet the continuous demand. Aspects that are typically encountered include:

* High pressures required by combined-cycle plants.

* Pressure drops caused by the large demands for natural gas.

* Consumers at the end of a pipeline not having optimum gas pressure.

Instead of increasing the size of whole gas mains systems, it is better and cheaper to keep pressure differences at gas-pressure regulating stations as low as possible. A small pressure drop across a gas-pressure regulator is very important in this regard. A small pressure drop at a gas-pressure regulating station can help increase the efficiency of the gas transport/distribution system itself. This is because pressure reductions cause an energy loss, which has to be compensated for by the compressors in the system in order to transport the gas.

Its makers report that the BAAI R100(S) differentiates itself from the competition with its ability to regulate gas at pressure differences as low as 50 kPa. In practical tests it has been seen that the relative error at this pressure differential only amounts to 2%. The optimally balanced valve construction of this regulator thus makes it well suited to such applications.
