ATI Systems is now offering Thalheim Tachometerbau's ATB-2B multiturn encoder with BiSS (bi-directional synchronous sensor) interface. This open-source digital interface offers reliable data transmission at rates of up to 10 Mbps even over cable lengths of up to 100 m.
Using just two RS422 data transmission lines keeps the cabling cost low, and the use of symmetrical differential transmission ensures a high degree of immunity against electrical noise and interference. The encoder is available in a 58 mm standard case with through hollow shaft offering bores of 10, 12 and 14 mm. Special variants are available on request.
The absolute encoder is programmable as a single turn encoder up to 19 bit digital steps per revolution, and as a multiturn encoder up to 24 bit turns. The device features fault detection monitoring with error and warning bits. A temperature monitoring facility is also built into the unit. All data is subject to validation and checking by cyclic redundancy check (CRC).
The ATD-2B is backwards compatible with existing interfaces and is available with analog sine/cosine signals. The model is offered with two different ranges of supply voltage: 5 V d.c. and 10 to 30 V d.c.
This encoder can be easily mounted to a motor, allowing position information feedback for automatic applications and the open standard (open source) BiSS interface makes it independent of any one manufacturer. The VHDL code and description for the master are freely available without licence fee, downloadable from the Web.
