Analysers offer improved management of energy costs

July 2004 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Better combustion control means improved process control, and this in return gives greater management over energy costs. This is why Oldham's PAN series could play a vital role in analysing and protecting the environment. The PAN series consists of portable gas analysers, available in a range of mobile measuring instruments. These devices are cost-effective, reliable, accurate and able to adapt to all fuels: solid, liquid or gaseous.

Oldham has designed a range of gas analysers, each with their own advantages:

The PAN 1500 analyser

This model is light, easy to handle and serves as an ideal measuring tool for heating specialists. Some of its beneficial features are:

* Six pre-programmed fuels and one programmable fuel.

* Simultaneous display of eight measured values.

* A storage capacity of up to 250 values.

* Designed for the measurement of O2, CO, CO2, C and NO.

The PAN 1400 analyser

This portable gas analyser is suitable to inspect boiler, burner and engine combustion. It has an integrated printer and provides rapid measurements of all-important parameters. Its special features include:

* Measurement of O2, CO, CO2, C and NO as well as soot spot determination.

* Seven pre-programmed and five programmable fuels.

* Simultaneous viewing of eight parameters on an illuminated display.

* A storage capacity of 220 measurements.

The PAN 2000 analyser.

This analyser not only measures O2, CO, NO, SO2, NO2, CxHy and also air and gas temperature.

Some of its advantages are:

* 23 Pre-programmed and four programmable fuels.

* Simultaneous viewing of six parameters on an illuminated display.

* An integrated memory that includes the breakdown of values, all transferable to a PC or external printer.

* Rechargeable battery.

The PAN 3000 analyser

This high-technology portable system includes a gas sampling probe with integrated NiCr-Ni thermocouple. Its benefits are:

* An accurate measurement of O2, CO, NO, SO2, NO2, H2S, CxHy air temperature, gas temperature, draught, soot, CO2 and excess air.

* 18 Pre-programmed fuels and four programmable fuels.

* Simultaneous viewing of all measuring parameters on an illuminated display.

* Integrated printer with possible graphic representation.

* Integrated memory.

Another extra is the PAN 600, which can be used as a high performance gas treatment system, in combination with any range in the PAN series.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
