RBF to supply new MV switchgear for Sasol

Johannesburg-based RBF Technology was recently awarded a contract to supply new 6,6 kV Switchgear for the Unit 41 Plant and Instrument Air Installation at Sasol Secunda.
RBF's managing director, Johan Basson elaborated on the scope of work: "Unit 41 6,6 kV Substation consists of an existing 6,6 kV switchboard equipped with oil breakers that feed air compressors and transformers. If power dips occur, re-acceleration of the motors is not possible due to mechanical constraints on the design of the gearbox and couplings, hence it was necessary to trip the oil breaker, allow the motor to run down to idling speed, re-close the oil breaker and re-start the motor again.
It was then decided to replace the out-of-date switchgear with new state-of-the-art Natus Nes Switchgear, which also includes a fast transfer system to eliminate downtime on the plant. The new 6,6 kV switchboard consists of three 1250 A incomers, bus tie, two 1,25 MW air compressor feeders, three 710 kW instrument air compressor feeders (one standby) and five transformer feeders. Power supply to the 6,6 kV switchboard is fed via bus ducting from 2 x 8 MVA transformers.
The 1,25 MW motor feeders run compressors, which take natural air from the atmosphere and it is then filtered via water coolers. The compressed air is fed to a dryer system before routed to the instrument air compressor. The instrument air is then filtered via water coolers before it is fed to the plant. Instrument air to the plant is of vital importance as this is used for operation of instruments, valves, etc. The plant air is used for ancillary equipment such as jackhammers, air tools, etc."
It is essential that the plant runs efficiently without stoppage. If any disruptions occur, and instrument air is not available, a complete shutdown can occur. "The Natus Nes system offers a high level of reliability and technical innovation, making it the perfect choice for Sasol's requirement," said Basson.

It is my opinion that most tuning methods are very crude. They do of course also offer a starting point for tuning if one is not fortunate enough to have a sophisticated tuning package like a Protuner around.

When a design engineer sets out to design a new part, component, or assembly, the intent is to meet the design requirements for fit, form and function, and also incorporate a certain degree of innovation and elegance to the overall design. There is no reason to re-invent the wheel by introducing a new design.
