Radiometric measurement supersedes legislation

April 2004 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

New legislation, changing to stay in touch with evolving technology, is a constant requirement that the majority of businesses support. However, the impact of ever more stringent stipulations on equipment specifications can pose a serious burden on industry. With this problem in mind, instrumentation specialist, Endress + Hauser, is focusing on the development of products that would negate this trend.

The company believes it has made significant progress in this regard with the launch of its new QG 2000, as this source container permits the highest degree of measurement sensitivity at the lowest possible radiation exposure. "We realised that there was a need for this product, because it is rarely possible to change an application as legislation changes, for example, to reduce the wall thickness of a vessel," a company spokesperson explains. "The extremely high screening effect achieved - especially in combination with rod scintillation detectors - has further benefits in that the sensor can now be installed where it is more accessible to operators."

Ideal for applications requiring high Co 60 source activities, the QG 2000 corresponds to international standards and complies with the requirements of the chemical industry. Endress + Hauser has designed the product so that it may be employed under extreme conditions in a rough, aggressive and corrosive atmosphere. It is equipped with a source of the highest safety rating, an additional mechanical metal enclosure for the protection of the source against mechanical and chemical influences and a padlock, which secures the OFF position of the switch. ON/OFF positions can be set either manually or pneumatically via a slideable source carrier rod. Different output angles are available for optimum adaptation to applications, as is also the case for all other source containers of Endress + Hauser.
