Wireless I/O directly into PLC/scada

April 2004 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Elpro (locally represented by Unitemp) is offering a means to feed a large number of field data (wireless I/O) into a PLC where previously there may have been insufficient I/O ports on the PLC.

Elpro's WIB (wireless instrumentation backbone) is a radio telemetry module that gathers information from wireless field devices and stores this in over 4000 I/O registers. These registers can be read directly by a PLC or scada package via Profibus, Modbus master, Modbus slave, Modbus plus, DeviceNet and Ethernet. Using the WIB module saves on both radio I/O and PLC I/O.

Elpro says that it makes switching pumps and valves over radio a breeze. The WIB modules come with free Windows-based configuration software, which makes it easy to set up. All that is needed is a PC and an RS232 cable. It can also be configured via a set of dipswitches inside the module. Elpro also produces radio telemetry modules that come in various I/O configurations to suit different applications. These will gather information in the field and transmit to the base station. All Elpro radio modules can update registers inside the WIB modules, which can then be read by a PLC. This gives the user the flexibility of integrating these modules into existing Elpro systems.

For instance: if a dam level needs to be detected, the 505 unit can be used to update an analog register on the WIB module. The 505 consumes very little power as it is only a transmitter and will go into 'sleep' mode once it has finished transmitting a value. This makes it suitable for sites where battery or solar power is being used. Its maker's report that the unit is popular in the field because of its small, inconspicuous design and a weatherproof IP65 enclosure.
