Yokogawa Electric has developed a new remote equipment monitoring and control application package called eCUBE that runs on Stardom, a new-concept network-based control system that was launched in March 2002. (The eCUBE package is available with effect from 30 January, 2004.) The company simultaneously released eCUBE aqua, a remote monitoring system that is designed for use with reverse osmosis membrane systems in seawater desalination plants and in pure water production equipment.
Background
Production monitoring and control systems are keeping pace with the rapid advances that are taking place in information technology. Global networks have made it much easier to construct remote monitoring systems, eliminating the need for expensive communications equipment.
At the same time, there is a need for dedicated solutions such as distributed control systems (DCSs) that can monitor and control production equipment with a high level of reliability and operability. An important consideration is the fact that such systems can provide continuity with legacy systems, ensuring the supply of products, parts and services over the entire lifetime of a facility.
Stardom offers a level of reliability that is comparable with that of a DCS while matching the openness, versatility, and affordability of scada systems. The eCUBE application package is based on the same technologies that make Stardom such a capable solution and it greatly simplifies the task of building a remote monitoring system.
Product features
The eCUBE remote equipment monitoring and control solution is for dedicated use with Stardom autonomous controllers. By installing this package on existing equipment and setting its parameters, users can easily build a network-based remote monitoring and control system at a low cost. The features of eCUBE include:
* Easy connection, engineering and maintenance.
* A wide choice of controller interfaces.
* Highly reliable fault-tolerant controller units.
* Useful functions including a membrane cleaning time prediction function optimised for reverse osmosis membrane systems (provided with the eCUBE aqua version).
* The ability to configure an application from the components in Yokogawa's application portfolio.
Stardom itself has been functionally enhanced as outlined below:
Use with plant resource manager
Customers can now use Stardom in combination with Yokogawa's integrated device management tool, plant resource manager (PRM). A device management tool for the fieldbus era, PRM makes field device management and maintenance more efficient and helps reduce the total cost of plant ownership.
Resistance to harsh environments
As an option, ANSI/ISA G3-level coatings can be applied.
Major target applications/markets
* Remote monitoring and logging of equipment.
* District heating and cooling systems.
* Building equipment, co-generation facilities.
* Seawater desalination plants.
* Pure water production equipment for semiconductor industry.
About Yokogawa South Africa
Yokogawa South Africa was originally founded in 1978 as Delta Controls, the exclusive distributor of Yokogawa Process Control and Instrumentation (PCI) products in South Africa. In 1997 Delta Controls became a wholly owned subsidiary of Yokogawa Europe B.V. The main Yokogawa product groupings are: recorders, controllers, transmitters, flowmeters, analytical (liquid and gas) as well as distributed control systems. The company is also the exclusive distributor for American Meter and Dresser gas equipment, Barksdale pressure and level devices and Kinetrol actuators.
